RV Buying Guide Article from Scott's RecreationCamping season is nearly upon us and many of you might be looking into getting your first, or next, RV. RVs are a great way to enjoy all the best parts of camping while still having a relaxing place to retreat to when you need a little break. Not to mention, they can come with a lot of great features that will add a little flavor to your trip.

But choosing the right RV can be tough. You may have noticed how many options you have and, while many of them may looks very similar, you’ve probably also noticed there are little differences that may make a big impact on your final decision.

That’s why Scott’s Recreation has provided a brief guide to choosing the right RV for you. That way, when you come visit one of our locations in Turner and Manchester, Maine, we can help you find the perfect RV and get your next camping adventure started. We’re near Portland, Lewiston, and Augusta.

Your Camping Style

Before we get into the RVs themselves, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got a set of priorities in hand when you walk into the dealership. This will help you narrow down the process, or at least help one of our staff members to guide you to something you might be interested in. For example, think about how big you’ll need your RV to be. This may include enough space for all passengers to sleep or spread out. It may also mean a little extra elbow room if you know you like to be gone for extended periods of time. You’ll also want to consider what you feel comfortable driving around. If this is your first RV, then a big rig might be a little intimidating, and it’s okay to shoot small.

Also think about the amenities you want. Some people just want the bare minimum while others may want to complete works. Or maybe you just need something in between. Certain RVs are better at accessing certain areas than others. Some of the biggest models tend to need special accommodations from RV parks, so you won’t be able to explore as freely with them. Make a list of things you’ll want and need or create a rough outline that describes what your prefered camping trip looks like. We’ll help you find the RV to match.

The RVs

Because there are so many different kinds of prefered camping styles, RV manufacturers have created RV groups to help accommodate these preferences. Understanding these groups is the key to finding the right RV.

Travel Trailers

Travel trailers are towable RVs, which means you’ll need another vehicle to haul them from one place to the next. They’re among some of the most diverse RVs, ranging widely in size, shape, and price. This makes them great for big groups and small, as well beginner RVers and veterans.

Fifth Wheels

Fifth wheels are also towable RVs, but because of how the hitch works, you must use a vehicle with an open or flatbed, like a pickup truck. They’re also generally the biggest and most leisurely towable RVs, which makes them a little pricier, but many people find the extra money to be worth it.

Toy Haulers

Toy haulers can come in a variety of forms, from towable RVs to motorhomes. Their defining factor is a large, empty space in the back of the rig, known as a garage. This is where people put powersports vehicles, like dirt bikes, ATVs, and UTVs, to create the ultimate camping experience.

Motorhomes

Motorhomes are completely contained with a drivetrain, so there’s now tow vehicle involved. They can range from the largest models, known as Class A motorhomes, to something a little smaller like Class C motorhomes, and all the way down to van-style rigs, or Class B motorhomes. If you want to skip the tow vehicle, then there’s probably a motorhome that fits everything you’re looking for.
