Why Buy A Fifth Wheel? Article from Scott's Recreation

If you’ve always camped in tents and you’re looking to improve upon your camping experience, you can’t do much better than a fifth wheel. Fifth wheels are luxurious, spacious, towable recreational vehicles that offer you all the amenities you’ll want on a camping trip and then some. They are also easy to transport, cost-effective and provide plenty of storage space for all your supplies, whether you’re fishing, hiking, surfing or biking during your excursion. Your local Maine RV dealer, Scott's Recreation, has locations in Turner and Manchester, Maine, so we know all about why fifth wheels are a great choice for families who want more when they camp.

High Value

Other RVs are often much more expensive when compared with fifth wheels. If you buy them used, you’ll save even more money, and there are plenty of great gently used fifth wheels out on the market. Since they don’t have an engine, you can save hundreds on a fifth wheel compared to a motorized RV, and insurance costs will be lower for this fact, too. Despite being much more economical, fifth wheels offer so many amenities that you won’t feel like you’re missing anything when you choose one over a motorized RV.

Use Of Your Towing Vehicle

When you’re driving a motorized recreational vehicle, you’re tethered to it wherever you go, even on errands and day trips away from your campsite. With a fifth wheel, once you unhitch your trailer, you’re free to take your truck wherever you like in the area, unencumbered by the weight of your home. This lets you run errands for food or propane, go see local attractions that might have small parking lots or street parking where a trailer wouldn’t fit, or head into mountain passes and through narrow forest roads to that great hiking or fishing spot. Having your towing vehicle free for use will make your camping experience so much better!

Ease of Transport

Due to their unique coupling style that is more stable than a traditional bumper-pull hitch on other trailers, fifth wheels are also easier to tow as you drive on highways as they’re less likely to pull and sway or drift into oncoming traffic. You have more control over them and they won’t come apart once the mechanism is locked in place. While it can take a few tries to master the hitching style, it’s very quick to couple and uncouple your fifth wheel once you know how. Also, since you’re driving your truck, there are fewer skills you’ll have to master because you’re used to how your truck operates. You may need to practice reversing a bit, but overall you’ll have an easier time towing your fifth wheel than driving a large rig.

Superior Storage Space

Fifth wheels are big on space. Because their coupling system is so strong, it lets them be heavier and longer than other styles of trailer, which in turn provides you with even more storage space. They’re often taller than other RV styles, too, which gives you more head room so you never feel cramped inside of one.

Lower Maintenance Needs

Without an engine, your maintenance needs in a fifth wheel are automatically lower and much less expensive than they would be for a motorhome or other recreational vehicle with an engine. You should be able to manage most of your fifth wheel’s upkeep at your home. Should you need assistance from a professional, you can always make an appointment with our service department so our mechanics can take care of whatever is amiss.
